charity: water 2011 Walk 4 Water – promo vid

Dearest family & friends,

By most estimates there are over 1 billion people on Earth who do not have access to clean drinking water. Fortunately, there are some people who are taking action to solve this serious issue. In my case, I am trying to contribute to a solution through “charity: water”, a non-profit organization that, to date, has funded over 3100 projects which have brought clean and safe drinking water to nearly 1.5 million people in 17 developing nations across the world. Most importantly, it is one of the few non-profit organizations in the world of which 100% of public donations are allocated to directly helping those in need.

How can we make a difference? First, I will “Walk for Water” (“W4W”) — literally. This upcoming summer/fall 2011 I will be walking through downtown Montreal from Concordia University to the Vieux-Port de Montréal (3.5 km). Each participant will be carrying two empty jerrycans in search of water. Upon reaching the “water source” we will fill the jerrycans with water and walk back to our starting point. My objective is to highlight the fortunate life we all live by educating and demonstrating to others the difficult and arduous task millions of men, women and children all over the world undertake everyday in their quest for water. On their journey for survival they walk everyday for hours to collect dirty water that they will use to drink, bathe and cook their food. We can make their journey safer. We can make their journey easier.

The second event will consist of organizing a twelve-hour hockey marathon, “Hockey for Humanity” (“H4H”). Why hockey? If we as Canadians are fortunate enough to play a leisure sport like hockey on frozen water then we should certainly be compelled to try to help bring better access to drinking water to those who need it not for leisure but for simple survival. Through conventional media (The Gazette, CTV, La Presse, RDS) and online media (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube) both the public and high profile individuals from the milieu of sports and entertainment will be invited to make a donation and to play “Hockey 4 Humanity”. Holding the hockey marathon at Centre Bell, one of the most prestigious arenas in the world and home of the Montreal Canadiens, would certainly raise considerable public awareness as well as significant corporate sponsorship.

So what can you do to help? In the spirit of giving rather than receiving, in the spirit of thinking of others rather than ourselves, this Christmas I am “giving up my gifts” by asking you all to help “charity: water” bring the gift of water, one of the most fundamental elements of life, to those who need it instead of wrapping up a present for me. I already have everything I truly need as well as more than I can ever ask for: my health, a loving circle of friends and family, a roof over my head, a warm bed and, of course, all the drinking water I can ever ask for.

I kindly invite you to give the gift of water this Christmas by making an online donation at (http://mycharitywater.org/johnmng).
Don’t forget to leave some words of encouragement!

Thanks for helping me help others!
Merry Christmas!
John
