Walkathon Charity Events

walkathon

A walkathon can be a great way to raise money for your organization or special project. Yes, a walkathon is a fundraiser. However, it is much more.

Walkathons are used to let others know about your organization’s mission. These charity events can be used to engage and promote local businesses. They also can be used as a way to identify new volunteers and advocates.

With so many potential benefits coming from one of these walk events, it is no surprise that many organizations are now hosting walkathon fundraising events. There are at least three major items to consider before deciding to get started:

  1. Successful walkathons require significant planning and preparation. You may have attended a walk event in the past that appeared easy. The easier it looks, the more planning and preparation was probably given to it that made it appear easy. Make sure you have several committed volunteers before getting started.
  2. Successful walkathons usually require some money before the fundraising begins and always requires insurance that covers the event. if your organization does not have an adequate insurance that will cover the walkathon, this is an additional cost that must be considered before getting started. Enlisting sponsors to your event can be a great way to raise the startup capital required.
  3. Successful walkathons require something that allows it to stand out above all of the other walkathons and other charity events that are taking place in the same time frame.  This something could be some twist to the event itself or it could be something unique about the organization’s mission or project the money is being raised for.

If you still want to hold a walkathon after considering these items, good for you! The purpose of the Walkathon Blog is to provide ideas, tips, resources and stories that will help you in your endeavor.

Enjoy!

Memory Walk Marathon 2010 – Avebury to Stonehenge – Alzheimer’s Society

http://www.alzheimers.org.uk

Memory Walk Marathon 2010 was an exciting challenge that took walkers through 6,000 years of British history. Walking the equivalent distance of a marathon, walkers started at the stone circle of Avebury and finished at the world heritage site of Stonehenge. This film tells the moving stories of some of the people who took part, and shows some of the incredible scenery and atmosphere on the day.

Our route took us from Avebury, past Silbury Hill south, walking by the Pewsey White Horse, along the Kennet and Avon Canal and then south across Salisbury Plain where the mystical stone circle of Stonehenge was our dramatic finish line.

Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest annual fundraiser and a great opportunity to have a fun day out with friends and family.

This year thousands of people took part in Memory Walk around the country, raising money to support people with dementia and their carers.

For more information on Memory Walk please visit http://www.memorywalk.org.uk or call 0870 417 0192.

There are more than 750,000 people in the UK affected by dementia with numbers set to rise to 1 million by 2021. More than half of these have Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.

Largs Viking Festival Fire Walk for Ayrshire Cancer Support Charity

Firewalking is the art of walking on hot coals, rocks or cinders without burning the soles of your feet.

The Firewalk in Largs was held at Aubrey Park Largs as part of the Lars Viking Festival 2010. Here brave volunteers walked across 20 feet of wood embers burning at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit without experiencing any pain or injury at all!

Firewalking is genuinely thrilling. Everybody finds their first Firewalk not only great fun but thoroughly exhilarating too. You will never forget it and you will be talking about it for a long time afterwards…

In addition to raising funds, the participants found the experience to be empowering, inspirational and horizon expanding to say the least! The effects of the motivational training session before the event will have long lasting benefits in your personal life, with increased awareness of how to achieve your goals, an enhanced view of your potential to succeed and a general ability to recognize when fear is preventing you from moving forward in your life
