Does my dog need to "train" for a 5K dog walk?

Hi! My dog and I are hoping to do a 5K walk for a charity. Of course, my dog and I already go on daily walks. But, not 5K long walks. Do I need to do something special to prepare her for the 5K? Do a "training" schedule like human runners do? :-)

My dog is 2 years old, in good health. Mix of lab and possibly dachshund or terrier. Shes 23 lbs.

It’s great that you’re doing this! :)

How far is she used to being walked? If it’s substantially less than 5K total in a day, I’d suggest at least getting her used to going for long ones and making sure that she’s happy with it. She should have no problems physically but she ought to enjoy it too! Have fun! :o )

she should get used to walking 5K before you go on the walk. Like humans would, slowly increase your distance on the walks. Also moniter her feet as you’re increasing the distance. If it seems like her pads are wearing down you may want to invest in a pair of boots for her. It sounds like she’s in good health but i would take her for a quick check up and ask the vet’s opinion before you do this. Good luck!

You should increase your daily walks gradually until you are up to 5K. What a great reason for you both to get into better shape ! Try a different route every day to make it interesting for both of you.

Its sort of hard to say, because labs have a lot of energy especially at such a young age. but i do suggest training. On your daily walks, walk a further distance each time. walking your dog a lot will firm up the pads on your dogs paws. Swimming is a great way to train you dog for a 5K walk.

Yes, you have to "train" your dog for the 5K. It doesn’t matter what breed she is. Yes, you would train the way "human" runners do. Dogs, just like humans, need to build up strength and stamina.

While your at it, you should also learn how to stretch out yoru dog and do PT on the peanut or the ball. Visit CleanRun.com you’ll find video’s on it.
