I have very mixed feelings on this.

1. Is it actually COMPULSORY? Or is it requested? Many people cannot tell the difference, but there is a huge one. If your boss wanders around trying to find people to help him at the events, then its perfectly alright. If the boss tells you that you MUST do XXX or be fired or disciplined, then it is NOT alright. If you are b**ching because you can't say no, or are afraid to, but there is no actual punishment for saying no, this is entirely your problem and you should acknowledge it as such.

2. If it is compulsory, consider speaking confidentially to someone in your state Labor Department. It is not legal to control what someone does on their own time in this manner.

My partner and I have done charity work and attended charity (and political) events for our entire 17 years together. I have been involved in helping charities since my early teens. I am one of those who does do "for the charity" as a matter of course. I would not like to be forced however. On the other hand, it seems to me, perhaps because of my nature, that you are somewhat mean and nasty to not want to help charities -- which I think is ultimately what you are suggesting. You may want the charity to come from your heart -- but how much does?

A final question for you... Why is this in the LGBT section?

Regards,

it would depend on the nature of the company and its clientele. if your company deals with these charities in a meaningful way for their corporate image then they need you be a part of that but if you are not being paid it is illigal to insist you be anywhaere but where you want during your off hours.

you should be prepared to leave this company if you arent happy with those conditions. they wont likely change. but before you leave for your next job you say NO! its my time . I give what i can but im under no legal obligation to give my time to anyone i dont freely choose. you can try firing me for that but i will sue your ass off
References :
I agree with you also. Specially because some organizations support things that you may not believe in. For example, unicef, though they do great many things, supports abortion, so I will not support them.
References :
They might ask politely but they cannot demand and cannot force you, especially on your day off.
References :
No I think it is wrong. I had an employer who required that we make a donation to the United Way and I thought it was unfair
References :
I agree with you. Nobody should force charity on anyone. Maybe your union needs to look at this. If you are required to attend on your days off, you should be paid for it. Otherwise, make the events optional.
