How should I train for a marathon in May?
Ok, so here’s the deal- I enjoy running, but only when I can walk some of the way. I’m really NOT a great long distance runner AT ALL.
(My boyfriends mom signed us up for a marathon taking place Memorial Day weekend and I don’t know where to start.)
How can I train so that I build my endurance? I’ve never been able to run a full mile without walking. I need any and all advice/tips that I can get.
I should have mentioned that it’s a 5 mile run. My boyfriend used the term "marathon". I suppose I should not have coined it as a marathon.
Check out the beginner marathon programs on www.runnersworld.com in addition to the suggestion from the first answer.
You’ve got a long way to go in 3 months, but its not impossible to finish a marathon with that long to train. Read some of the articles on the websites, they’ll teach you about equipment, diet, safety, etc.
Good luck!
EDIT: haha, ok, so its only 5 miles, that will be MUCH easier to prepare for in 4 months! If you build slowly, gradually increasing your distance, you’ll probably be able to do 5 miles without walking by mid-March!
Again, look to the web for some training plans, runnersworld has good stuff. Just take it slow, gradually increase, and stay focused. You’ve got lots of time to prepare. Also, feel free to poke fun at your boyfriend, since now you know that its not a marathon, but a much shorter race!
Good luck (again!)

You didn’t mention how old you are or what weight you are. Assuming that you are old enough and not significantly overweight, running a marathon in a little over three months is possible – but difficult.
My brother, who was completely unfit, overweight (by about 6/7 kg) and a long-term smoker used the "get me around" training schedule on this page and it worked better than I would have imagined:

Please bear in mind that the training schedule I am recommending is the *absolute minimum* and does require dedication. If you don’t think you can follow that programme, then shouldn’t really try doing it.

First, if you can’t run a mile without walking, there is no way you’ll be able to train your body to handle 26 miles in the time frame. My wife is training for her third marathon (I’m skipping this one), and she already started training three weeks ago. She’s an avid runner and she loves marathons and it takes her at least 16 weeks to build up for the race.
I would say you should not worry about joining this marathon. Either you won’t complete it, or you’ll get an injury and hurt yourself, or you’ll have such a terrible time you won’t want to ever try again.
If you’re wholly intent on going, go to the library or a book store and get a few books on how to run marathons. There’s a tremendous amount of literature out there and you need to educate yourself. You’ll read about eating, equipment, running programs, and you’ll get motivational stories. Almost all books suggest you have at least a half year of running 3 miles consistantly before you take on a full marathon.
Go to the library, read about it. That’s the first step.
Good luck!

There are plenty of running sites that give you training programs. go to http://www.runnersworld.com and there is a program called smart coach you can enter some data and it designs a program for you. this should be done after you go through the 10 week program they have in beginning running 101 is a progressive run/walk program for beginners.http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-380-381-387-2201-0,00.html
and yes it helps in anything to use correct terminology if you want information about it. There is a big difference between training for 5 miles vs 26.2 miles

First of all, your heart has to be in it. If this is something that you are doing because your boyfriend wants you to, then you might need to give the whole idea some more thought. Only do it if you want to do it. If you enjoy running then you may want to enter a 5k first to see how you like that experience, however running a 5k and running a half or full marathon are two different animals. Some people like myself don’t do well at 5k or 10k races but do moderately well at long distances that is because I am not quick off of the starting line and I can’t maintain a fast pace for very long. As far as taking walk breaks, that is perfectly fine especially if your a novice. In fact even seasoned marathoners take occasional walk breaks. Jeff Galloway wrote a book called Marathon, You Can Do It, in which he over and over again preaches the importance of taking frequent walk breaks. What ever you do, if this is your first marathon and you have little or no running base, DON’T attempt to run the entire thing, just soak up the marathon atmosphere and have fun and start training right now. Good luck
