I am registering with a charity which helps pet owners (and pets)?
Volunteers for the Cinnamon trust offer help to elderly or terminally ill pet owners doing such things like walking dogs.
I received a registration pack today and it asks me if i have ever been taken to court or cautioned by the police. When i was 12 (i am 15 now), i was caught shoplifting; i am truly sorry for the damage i caused and have changed. Will this effect my chances of "working" with the Cinnamon Trust? I would also like to do other charity work, specifically working in a local charity shop; will they ask these details?
I may be mistaken, but I believe that your juvenile records are sealed and you do not have to report it. However, it is always best to be honest. Put down what you've told us here: it was 3 yrs ago and you have matured and changed. I think its commendable that you want to do this! My dad died 10 years ago after several months under hospice care. Then his two dogs and one cat moved in with me. Throughout dad's illness the pets did not get the attention and care that they needed.

They might do i'm sorry to say even though you regret doing what you did it doesn't look good for a job such as this were they want someone who is trustworthy and responsible. Ask yourself this first, would you trust and feel comfortable for someone who had stolen goods from a shop to take your beloved dog unsupervised for a walk? If the answer is no then that's how they will see it as well.

I commend your wish to help the community! However your best policy is always to be scrupulously honest, even if it means you don't get to do what you would like.
Don't let that put you off though. There are plenty of other animal charities around which need help so perhaps try one of them?
Incidentally when I contacted Cinnamon a few years ago to volunteer they didn't even bother to reply, so good for you that you've got even this far with them!

Honesty is the best policy. You will have much less trouble in the long run if you are just honest and say on the forum what you have said here.
There are many animal charities, many of which are local I am sure.

Just be honest – you were only 12 at the time. However, you might check whether you need to declare this now. For some things there is a time limit. Ask this question in the legal section for a proper answer.
If you get turned down, don't worry there are other charities that will give you a chance.
Primarily I would get some professional advice – it will be worth its weight in gold!

It may affect the position as it's a matter of trust. You may have changed, but others may not have. Elderly and terminally ill can be targets for unscrupulous individuals so the law trys to weed out those they think may be a risk. Be honest with them and take it from there. If you don't get this one there are many other areas where you can help out … elderly in your own neighborhood, or your local animal shelters.
