HOw do walk-a-thons, marathons, walking for ____cause help cure a disease/illness?

i always wondered how, say, walking to cure Breast Cancer would benefit the cause? I mean, do people sponsor the event and pay a certain amount of money that attribute to the cause or make a donation ; how does it work =) ?

As for walkathons, one is to get sponsors who would pay say $5 for each lap around the park. If one does 10 laps, and they have 5 sponsors, $250 would be donated directly to the cause.

The person would get the exercise and the center for breast cancer would get the money, a win win, in most people's books.

Marathons are done the same way, just by the amount of time it takes one to complete instead.

Hope that helps!
