Do people who walk in a marathon to promote fighting cancer have to pay a fee to participate?

Is that how they raise money for cancer research?

They have to pay a fee to register AND raise money thru donations.

Yes and they get sponsors who agree to pay them for every mile walked . For example if it is a 10 mile walk, then someone may agree to pay $5 a mile. If they complete the walk, that person pays $50.00.It all goes to the charity.
