Walking a half-marathon at 32 weeks pregnant – can it be done?
(Answers from women who've had babies and exercised throughout preferable!!)
I'm 21 years old, 22 weeks pregnant, fit and healthy and continuing to exercise as before unless I feel tired etc. I would like to do a 13 mile charity walk in june when I'll be 32 weeks (its a midnight summers walk for a local hospice) and feel I will be more than able (ran a half-marathon last summer). However, this is my first pregnancy so I don't know what 32 weeks feels like for a fit woman? My bump is growing at a normal rate for number 1 and the baby is totally healthy based on the scans. I really want to hear about the typical aches and pains at 32 weeks, and if other women who have continued to exercise throughout their pregnancies think that a lesiurely 13 miles is do-able! Thanks!
Yes, it is doable!
Things that are going well for you:
- you are already active
- you are 21 yrs young
- you have the will!
Things you have to watch for:
- short of breath at 32 wks
- The frequent urge to pee
- The relaxation of the muscles, which may tire your feet and affect your balance. For this, get supportive tennis shoes, or the support for the arch from dr.scholl or equivaqlent. DO NOT buy any footwear for the occasion from now, wait till the weekend before.
- you may have more restless nights which might affect your energy level during the day. If you stopped or slowed down on coffee, you may have one cup the day of the walk and it will do wonders !
- Keep on walking until then, so your body and muscles stay as flex and strong as they should.
- Make sure you have a way out during the walk, just in case.
One thing to keep in mind, don't get too comfortable with a certain routine in pregnancy, cause the longest one last 2 weeks!
I'm 32 weeks, and loving it!

I really dont think you should be doing that much walking whenyour that far along. Its really not advised.

Sure it is. I kept active with my daughter and at 40 weeks went on a church picnic. We hiked even though it was about 95 F out. We hiked down a path to the lake and it took us about 15 to 20 minutes, all downhill. On the way back I hiked back up the hill, sweating my butt off. I did have to stop every so often. Just make sure you pace yourself. Exercise is good during pregnancy as long as it isn't excessive.

Trust me when I tell you that you will not want to do this at 32 weeks. The growing baby puts pressure on your veins and nerves and circulation won't be so great. It will be very uncomfortable, and you won't want to give up once you start, right? I don't think its a good idea.

i wouldnt push yourself that far at all. Especially that far along.. your baby will more than likely have dropped by then, and your back will be aching even to sit down.. TRUST ME lol.. I have two children, one of which was over 9 pounds when she was born.. i'm STILL feeling it in my back.
Walking is a fantastic idea during pregnancy.. its great to stay in shape.. but 13 miles is over-doing it and you should bring it up to your OB/GYN and get their opinions as well.

It really depends on you. With my 1st at 32 weeks I felt great. With this baby, not so great. I would suggest you ask your doctor. Get a maternity belt for support and be prepared to take breaks if needed and drink lots of water. If you have to step out, don't worry about it.

Every woman is different. If you've remained active throughout and are not having any pelvic discomfort yet and such you could probably tentatively schedule it. I would say though that by 32 weeks a lot can change. If the weather is hot you have the issue of swelling – I did this a lot with my first son and the swelling itself can make it difficult to walk outdoors for too long. Also at that point if your baby has dropped at all you may find the pressure on your pelvis makes it difficult to walk that long.
If you are still feeling good though just pace yourself for a very nice leisurely stroll with it and give it a shot
. I plan on hiking and such still this year and camping – something I love to do not pregnant and see no reason to give it up pregnant since I am low risk. I figure I'll just have to make some modifications like a good new pair of very supportive hiking boots (or in your case running shoes) and just be willing ot pace myself and come prepared for any "emergencies" that come up while we're out climbing in the woods.
Good luck whatever you decide hon!

The aches and pains are different for everyone. I know really fit and healthy woman that have no aches and pains. You really should consult your OB on this matter. You might not want to over do it, that late in pregnancy. Example when women want to get labor started they start walking more and more the gravity helps bring the baby down.
I suggest not doing it without discussing it with your doctor. If they say it is okay and you do it. Good for you, you get mad props, I know I was a lazy bum with both my pregnancies. I now have 70 pounds to lose.

You should ask your doctor.
I'm currently 32 weeks along and I had planned on doing a mini marathon myself. However, since my baby's sitting so low I'm having pains just walking for more than 20 minutes at a time, so I'm unable to participate this time around.
You're doctor may tell you you can, but I'd be sure to ask just incase.

I am 37 weeks abd feel that I could have done it at week 32, even now I feel that I can! Everyone is different though and you just need to wait and see how you feel when the time comes and talk to your doc about it! You can do it and if you get tired just stop and know that you did the best you could!

walking for about 20-40 min is quite different than walking 13 miles. I would consult your doc and see how you feel as the date gets closer. you will be carrying quite a bit of extra wt and this may not be good for your body. Also, dehydration can lead to early labor…so walking that much if its hot may be risky and you will need to consume plenty of fluid…so pregnant, drinking lots of water = lots of potty breaks! keep that in mind as you are considering trecking along!

your mad i wouldnt advise it hun you will be putting to much pressure on yourself therefore on the baby to im 22 and when i was nearly full term walking up the road was tiering coz your breathing for two really , i tried to keep fit but as you get bigger it gets harder i dont no anybody that would be able to that i mean your body will be under enought pressure as it is plus they tell you to slow right down when your heavy youll see hun

sure you can. the thing is if you are dialated it might cause you to have contractions but they say that walking is one of the best ways to exercise when your pregnant. how ever if you start to feel weird you should stop. also if your tired you should stop and take breaks and make sure you stay well hydrated. good luck and have fun. maybe call your dr. and make sure it's okay but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

I wouldn't want to do that even if I wasn't pregnant!! hah
I wouldn't suggest it. Though its probably the best idea to be asking your doctor if its safe. You could cause yourself to go into early labor if you aren't careful and thats pretty early for the baby to come. I mean no offense of course but you should be asking if its safe to do so, not if you would be comfortable!
